Karen awarded DCB

Former National Statistician Karen Dunnell has been made a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath in the Queen's birthday honours list. This recognises Karen's significant personal contribution to statistics in the UK and internationally. It is also a recognition of the importance of work on official statistics to national life as a whole.
Becoming a Knight or Dame is recognition of a pre-eminent contribution in any field of activity. Sir Michael Scholar, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, said: 'I'm delighted for Karen. She has done such a lot for ONS, the Government Statistical Service, the UK Statistics Authority and for women in the Civil Service'.
Karen began her career as a researcher and later became a lecturer in medical and social studies before joining the Office for Population Censuses and Surveys in 1974. When ONS was formed, Karen was first a divisional director, rising to executive director level before becoming the National Statistician, overseeing the implementation of the Statistics and Registration Services Act and leading the office through a major period of technological and organisational change. She is a visiting fellow at Nuffield College Oxford and has published three books on health and demographics.
