Cipfa statisticians namecheckedThe 'helpful statisticians' at the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) received recognition in a How much of your council tax gets wasted on waste?, a comment piece by Donnachadh McCarthy, founder of national Carbon Footprint day, in www.guardian.co.uk. McCarthy quoted Cipfa and Welsh Assembly sources showing that councils in England and Wales spent £4.546bn on waste collection and disposal in 2008. The Cipfa statisticians further revealed that just £43m of that total goes into reducing the amount of rubbish generated in the first place across all English and Welsh councils. McCarthy encouraged readers to visit the Guardian's data blog to work out what percentage of their council tax 'is being wasted on waste-disposal'. Further he urged them to contact local media and councillors to demand action on waste reduction. |
