Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it's Jan Fischer
The piece in WSJ.com is more evidence of the world's media picking up Google's 'statisician is the sexy job' theme. It describes how, "without missing a beat, [Fischer] assumed the role of caretaker Czech Prime Minister, brought a sense of calm to European politics and skilfully led the Czech EU Presidency to a quiet and problem free conclusion." Fischer is a member of the Czech Statistical Society and has been the president of the Czech Statistical Office since 2003. He is a graduate in statistics and econometrics with a postgraduate Candidate of Sciences degree in the field of economic statistics awarded in 1985. Following graduation Fischer joined the Federal Statistical Office, becoming vice-chairman in 1990, a position he held until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. In parallel, he pursued a role leading a team that supervised the results of parliamentary and local elections and took up vice-chairmanship of the newly established Czech Statistical Office. In 2001 he participated in an IMF research mission to explore the establishment of a statistical office in East Timor. The following year he worked as chief of research institute at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics of the University of Economics in Prague. Fischer is also a member the International Statistical Institute, the Scientific Council and Board of Trustees and a Scientific Board of the Jan Evangelista PurkynÄ› University in Ústí nad Labem. |
