Prof Frank KellyRSS Fellow Frank P Kelly has been honoured with a EURO Gold Medal 2009 laureate for his "groundbreaking methodology in stochastic network analysis, optimization and their applications".

EURO is the Association of European Operational Research Societies within IFORS, the International Federation of Operational Research Societies.

Frank (59) is a professor of Christ's College Cambridge. He has had over 100 papers published and his 1979 book on Reversibility and Stochastic Networks is regarded as a classic.

His work focuses on performance issues in communication networks but the concepts he has developed are applied in a wide range of other disciplines. From 2003–2006 he served as Chief Scientific Advisor of the Department of Transport of the British Government, transferring his knowledge on routing and pricing in communication networks to road traffic networks.

Kelly has several patents, which combine high level theory and real world applications in an efficient way. In his citation, EURO Gold Medal 2009 jury chair András Prékopa described Frank as "one of the greatest OR personalities" who "truly deserves the EURO Gold Medal 2009".
