Worldwide media coverage for Significance article on 'hobbit man'

An article in Significance on the evidence that 'hobbit man' was a separate species of man has been widely covered in the world media.

Coverage included the Daily Telegraph, Scientific Computing and the Sydney Morning Herald. Bones discovered in 2004 on the Indonesian island of Flores were reported as belonging to a previously unknown species of early human. Dubbed 'hobbit man' due to its small height, the findings sparked controversy with some suggesting that the bones were from a known early human that had been dwarfed by disease.

Statistical analysis American scientists William Jungers and Karen Baab, however, provide support for the theory that the bones do come from a hitherto undiscovered early human.

'Significance' is the keyword relating this story to the conference report back "Anniversary celebrations hosted by Auld Reekie". Another connection to that report is to the 10 September conference proceedings, specifcally Stephen Stigler's delivery of the Campion Lecture:
"Stephen spoke on Darwin, Galton and the statistical enlightenment. He gave a new account of how Francis Galton invented multivariate analysis in 1885, starting from a problem implicit in his cousin Charles Darwin's Origin of Species. What was new in the account was the story of how Galton started with the intention of mathematising Darwinian evolution but ended up discarding almost all that was Darwinian with a method that was much more general and had no need for natural selection."
