David HandIt was announced on the 21 January that Bernard Silverman had been appointed as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Home Office and had resigned as RSS president. At the meeting on the 27 January Council members roundly congratulated Bernard on his new appointment.

The members then went on to discuss options moving forward with the position of president. Council were very pleased to learn that the outgoing president David Hand would be willing to take up the role again for a short time whilst the Society elected the next president through its normal processes. After some discussion about how David could be supported during this time he was warmly thanked by Council members and co-opted as president of the Society.

The President Nominating Committee has started its process under the chairmanship of past president Tim Holt. Tim and the committee are now tasked with proposing a nomination to Council. If their recommendation is adopted it will then be put to the Fellowship in the Spring.

So it is possible that the Society will have its next president by July 2010. Because of the ad hoc vacancy, Council can negotiate with the president elect around when their presidency starts and how long their term of office will be.

Further news about the proposed next president will be circulated to Fellows by RSS NEWS and this website.
