HE STEM project picks up MMG batonThe National HE STEM project has taken up the challenge of exapnding participation in mathematics and enhancing the skills and knowledge base of the UK's workforce, following a House of Commons reception for its precursor the More Maths Grads project (MMG). The MMG project, a pilot funded by HEFCE STEM, was very successful. The project contributed "in some way to the 20,000 increase in the number of A level mathematics entries and perhaps also to the 15% increase in enrolments on to mathematics courses in higher education in 2009," according to the MMG evaluation report. At the MMG House of Commons reception in January, former Minister for Education Charles Clark said "we have to stand up for mathematics at all levels, for getting more maths into the way we live and work, and more maths into the way we educate and carry it forward … more maths grads, more maths teachers, more maths qualifications." The £21 million, 3-year HE STEM project is based at the University of Birmingham and managed by Michael Grove. |
