NCAER-CMCR household survey to "to help shape public policy" in India
Initially, the survey will canvass over 120,000 households to generate state-specific estimates covering urban and rural areas, and individual estimates for India’s largest 225 urban areas. Thereafter it will continue on a rolling sample basis. “Household demand is one of the key pillars of the Indian economy. Business strategists and policy makers require continuous knowledge, insight and foresight in this area … The centre will leverage and build on the excellent and widely acclaimed work already being done in this arena by NCAER”, said NCAER Director-General Suman Bery. The Indian economy is expanding rapidly and for two decades NCAER has been working to provide "objective data and analysis to support India’s economic development through public policy and private initiative”, according to Bery. CMCR was launched in March 2010, to build and disseminate seminal knowledge on the Indian consumer base and consumer markets to both business strategy and to help shape public policy. It is lead by Dr Rajesh Shukla, chief statistician at NCAER. Shukla is a renowned researcher and author of books and reports including ‘The Great Indian Middle Class’ (2004), ‘The Great Indian Market’(2005), ‘How India Earns, Spends and Saves’ (2007) and ‘Next Urban Frontier: Twenty Cities to Watch’ (2008). CMCR is supported by several major commercial organisations including ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever, McKinsey and Company and Nokia. |
