Anant to succeed Sen as India's chief statistician

The Indian government has confirmed its appointment of TCA Anant as the country's chief statistician. Anant also becomes secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

Anant suceeds India's first chief statistician Pronab Sen, whose three-year tenure was extended for three months to enable the appointment of his successor.

Anant became professor of economics at Delhi School of Economics in 1998. Previously, he was managing director at the Centre for Development Economics, Delhi School of Economics and worked as consultant for the Tenth and Eleventh Finance Commissions.

Anant is a member of the Expert Group on Trade and Competition Policy, Ministry of Commerce in India and a life member of the Indian Econometric Society. He is also visiting professor and member of Academic Council at National Law University, Jodhpur, India.

He received a bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Delhi University and PhD in economics from Cornell University.
