The Council for the Mathematical Sciences has announced that Professor Frank Kelly will take over from Professor Sir David Wallace as its independent chair in October 2010.

Professor Kelly is Professor of the Mathematics of Systems in the University of Cambridge, and Master of Christ's College. From 2003 to 2006 he served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the United Kingdom's Department for Transport. He is a trustee of the policy-research group RAND Europe and a non-executive director of Cambridge-based software company Autonomy..

• The Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS) was established in 2001 by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the London Mathematical Society and the Royal Statistical Society. In 2008 the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and the Operational Research Society became CMS members.
