The Statistics Authority published its monitoring report ‘Strengthening user engagement’ in July following an earlier interim report and consultation with users of statistics. The report looks at ways in which the voice of users of statistics could be more clearly heard by data producers and its influence on the work of the statistical service be progressively enhanced. The report includes a recommendation that government statisticians should work with the Royal Statistical Society to improve communication between statistical experts and journalists. It also advocates producer bodies working actively with Statistics User Forum (and other user group structures) to help user groups represent the interests and priorities of their members.

The Statistics Authority announced in May that it would consider what further steps might be taken in the preparation of a monitoring report on communication of measurements of inflation and consumer prices. Comments are welcome and may be emailed to the authority. to authority.enquiries@statistics.gsi.gov.uk.

Since the June election, a new ministerial code has been issued including guidance for ministers on statistical propriety. This followed correspondence from the Authority chairman and the cabinet secretary on the subject.

UK Statistics Authority reports and correspondence are on its website.
