John Nelder, President of the Society from 1985-6, has died at the age of 85.
He was Head of the Statistics Section of the National
Vegetable Research Station from 1951-68, and of the Statistics Department and
Biomathematics Division of Rothamsted Experimental Station from 1968-84. He was a Visiting Professor at Imperial
College from 1972 to 2009.
John, who was elected to the Royal Society in 1981, has had
a seminal influence in several areas of statistics, including experimental design,
data analysis, statistical theory, and statistical software. He was awarded the Guy Medal in silver
of the Royal Statistical Society in 1977, and the Guy Medal in gold in
2005.
