Ramadas Bhat diesProfessor Biliyar Ramadas Bhat, an academic who popularised science, mathematics and statistics through his essays and lectures, has died aged 80. He was an active member of the Science Congress of India, and authored books including ‘Modern Probability Theory' and ‘Stochastic Models’. With knowledge spanning a range of disciplines, Ramadas Bhat was well known for his presentations at international symposiums. Ramadas Bhat taught at the University of Hyderbad, Karnataka University and the Indian Statistical Institute. He spent two decades in the department of statistics at Karnataka University, latterly as its head. After official retirement, he worked as a visiting professor at universities in Australia, Botswana, Russia and the US. Ramadas Bhat was born in Bilyar Salmara near Shankarpura in the Indian state of Karnataka. He completed an MA in mathematics at Madras University then an MA is statistics at Karnataka University. After graduation, Ramadas Bhat read his PhD in mathematics and statistics at Berkeley, where he studied probability under professor M Loeve. |
