Though counting in Malaysia's fifth census has ended officially, any members of the public not visited by enumerators have been asked to contact a Department of Statistics hotline.

The count was incomplete because in some areas enumerators had abandoned their jobs prematurely leaving the Census Commission the task of finding and training replacements at short notice.

Census Commissioner and Chief Statistician Datuk Wan Ramlah Wan Abdul Raof has committed to following up reports and sending enumerators out to dwellings missed in the initial count. The Malaysian media has also carried reports from citizens of inadequate and inaccurate counting.

Take up of the e-census failed to meet forecasts, with only about one in 100 people using it, compared with expectations of one in 40.

The Census Commission is now set to run a validation exercise to confirm the accuracy of its data. "We will be sending out a quality control team consisting of our full-time department officers who will enumerate and check on the consistency of the results from a selection of enumeration blocks," said Ms Wan Ramlah.

Though the full results wil not be available before mid 2012, she has reaffirmed the intention to publish headcount figures in November this year.
